Hatteras Techno-talk

Yesterday, Mike joined other Loopers and traveled from Morehead to New Bern, NC
to tour the Hatteras yacht production plant.

It was informative and educational about
beautiful recreational boats.

We learned wood has been replaced by resin infused foam. This high density foam is custom cut to fit as a strut in the bottom of the hull structure. The straight edge will be the floor and ruff edge will fit the bottom of the hull.

This is a mold for a 75 foot trawler.

Work in progress! Struts placed in mold for hull strength, all fiber glassed into place to make one solid structure.

This is the deck for the hull, built separately. There are three pieces to the yacht: hull, deck and super structure.

This is the super structure of a smaller boat. There seemed to be about 15-20 boats on the assembly line. All boats are sold before being built and takes up to a year to produce.

Again, the struts in place and ready to install the plumbing and electrical systems, all installed before the deck is placed on the hull.

The engines are also installed in place before the deck is attached to the hull.  I wonder how an engine can be replaced?!
They are beautiful engines that I wouldn't mind having the opportunity of giving them an oil change!
2800 HP each...and $$$$$$=$300,000 EACH

The new technology, a gyro stabilizer is placed in the lowest chamber,
replacing stabilizing rudders for a smoother ride in rough waters.

The boat market has changed in the last 20 years, 60% are now Sport Fishing yachts.

A 105 footer in the paint booth!

Inside a 75' that is on the river on the back side of Hatteras's 120-acre property.
This the upper level and all sleeping berths are below, including the crews quarters.

This is the finished product on it's way to a happy customer. This tour was organized by our new friends Julie and Milton. John and Deb, Jeff and Debbie and myself had this wonderful 2-hour tour. Our tour guide, Alden, was the main electrical engineer who knew his stuff as he has worked for Hatteras for over 40 years!
